Homework

Because of testing, we won’t see each other much next week; in fact, we are scheduled to meet only once.  In class we will continue our practice with timed writing.

Meanwhile, I want you to work on one of two projects.  Most of you preferred to read the play A Doll’s House ( which is also translated as A Doll House) by Henrik Ibsen.  Some of you wanted to read poems.  I will let you choose.  Whichever you decide, I want you to upload the answers to the questions and post on the discussion board BY Sunday night, April 19.

These are the questions associated with the play:

A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

For Monday carefully (and critically) read Acts I and II of the play. Then, after class, finish the last act of the play. Answer the following questions for Monday (period 4. Periods 1 and 3 have this on Tuesday):

1. List and describe the play’s characters.

2. The play’s setting is very important. In fact, it was one of the suggested works to answer the open ended question of the 2012 AP Lit exam. For each act, describe the setting. Where does the play take place? In what rooms of the house? At what time of year? Time of day? How does the setting change in EACH act? What could these changes signify?

3. So far, is Kristine Linde a foil to Nora? Explain why / why not.

4. Describe Nora’s relationships. How does she treat (and how is she treated by) the people in her life — Torvald, Kristine, Dr. Rank, the maid, her children — and how does she react to them? Explain the significance.

10. What is the significance of Dr. Rank’s illness? What is said to cause it?why is that important?

11. By the time the play opens, Nora’s father is long since deceased; however, he has a significant impact on the story. Explain how so.
